The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Building Inspections Program is a vital component of employee safety. It is a proactive approach to identifying hazards and conditions that might subject employees and students to injury or possible death. The EHS Office conducts building inspections on a regular basis following the guidelines of various regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), and the North Carolina Fire Code, set forth by the Department of Insurance (DOI).
The Department of Insurance (DOI) is required by NC General Statue 58-31-40 to inspect each State-owned building at least annually to identify any conditions which may be detrimental to the safety of the building and its occupants. Each year during the summer a DOI Inspector conducts a comprehensive inspection of the university buildings. The inspector is escorted by an EHS staff member and the inspection takes approximately one (1) month to complete.
